Finding Your IP Address

An IP address is an identifier for a computer or device on a TCP/IP network. Networks using the TCP/IP protocol route messages based on the IP address of the destination. The format of an IP address is a 32-bit numeric address written as four numbers separated by periods.

Depending on your location, your campus IP address would be "130.184.xx.xxx" or "10.x.x.x." Your computer must be online to obtain an IP address.

Find Your IP Address

Windows

  1. Open Command Prompt from the Start menu or by entering "Command Prompt" in the search bar.
  2. At the prompt, enter "ipconfig /all."
    Note: There must be a space before "/all."
  3. Press Enter.

macOS (OS X)

  1. Open System Preferences from the Apple menu.
  2. Click the Network icon.
  3. Select your network connection from the list on the left. The IP address will be displayed on the right.

Reset Your IP Address

If you cannot obtain an IP address from wireless or wired connections on campus, try resetting your IP address.

Windows

  1. Open Command Prompt from the Start menu or by entering "Command Prompt" in the search bar.
  2. At the prompt, enter "ipconfig /release."
    Note: There must be a space before "/release."
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Enter "ipconfig /renew."
    Note: There must be a space before "/renew."
  5. Press Enter.

macOS (OS X)

  1. Open System Preferences from the Apple menu.
  2. Click the Network icon.
  3. Select your network connection and click Advanced.
  4. Open the TCP/IP tab.
  5. Click "Renew DHCP Lease." Click OK.
